fd2s worked closely with the landscape architect to conceive, design, and oversee the implementation of numerous celebratory moments for this “gateway” park, which represents the first phase of a 138-acre mixed-use development that includes more parks and a cultural walking and biking trail.

The park honors members of the US military and first responder communities of the City of Kyle and the surrounding county. Our work interprets and supports a variety of communal and intimate outdoor spaces including the Memorial, Peace, and Family Gardens. The focal point of the park is the Memorial Garden, which features an Honor Wall, Remembrance Totem, and Time Capsule.

The dedication element for the park incorporates a unique dynamic effect wherein, each year on September 11, at 9:37am EDT, sunlight passes through a pentagon-shaped opening in the support panel and illuminates the 9/11 memorial emblem imbedded in the pavement below. This effect captures the very moment that American Airlines Flight 77 crashed into the Pentagon building in Washington DC on September 11, 2001 – the date of the deadliest attack in US history.

“fd2s proved to be a fantastic partner on the project. I appreciate their leadership.”
