Wayfinding Consulting

For Arapahoe Libraries District, which connects over 700,000 residents in southeastern metropolitan Denver to information and people, fd2s developed signage and wayfinding standards for multiple branch locations and the library’s mobile services. The project came on the heels of a major branding initiative, and the new signage standards form the basis for a visually unified program of identification and wayfinding across the entire library system. These standards also enable library staff to make most changes and updates to the signage using in-house resources.

The fd2s team’s work included conducting a comprehensive experience audit that comprised interviews with library staff and patrons, a photo inventory of existing signage assets, and real-world navigation exercises. The findings from the experience audit enabled us to create signage standards that reinforce the brand while also addressing the needs of a wide range of users, not to mention providing the flexibility to adapt to the varied architecture of the system’s eight libraries.

“fd2s worked to create a wayfinding sign package that complemented our brand and streamlined our sign maintenance process. We now have a sign package for our eight library locations that looks professional, cohesive and helps our patrons navigate our spaces. I loved fd2s’s approach of starting from the patron’s perspective and involving various stakeholders in building the sign standards. They creatively solved so many of our unique sign challenges and set us up for success for many years to come.”
